kupkutu

project for Light InForming Design

spring 2018

Utilizing the natural texture of wood and its heterogeneous diffusion of light, the luminaire provides a sense of familiar tactility and invites the user to touch the illuminated grains of wood. With every grasp the housed light source is revealed, displaying its immaculate anatomy. In its open form, the exposed bulb parades its intricate wiring as a delicate spectacle.

While the upper quadrants are closed, the tiny slits between the thinly planed pieces of pine diffract light in accordance with light’s wave-particle duality and disperse grates of luminance. Through the mobility of the upper quadrants and the dimmer on the side kupkutu provides adjustable direct and indirect illumination.
